Try getting a curling iron that is shaped like a cylinder. Get a skinny one though, it will shape around your hair better, and your curls won't be too big.

SEDU! I have tried the Chi, the Solia, the MaxiGlide, not to mention Gold-N-Hot, and have had nothing but success with the Sedu flat iron. The plates are tourmaline/ceramic, you can control the temperature, and the iron is not heavy. I have 4a/3c hair (super curly, medium coarse) hair, put the iron on the 3rd or 2nd highest setting, and it straightens AND silkens my hair with one swoop. I have not yet experienced any severe damage (of course, anytime you apply heat to your hair, you receive damage of some sort, but my hair is still healthy, shiny, and I don't trim my ends more than usual).
The Sedu isn't cheap; I bought mine from folica.com for $115, but I've had it for almost two years now with zero problems.
I have a tourmaline curling iron I bought from Walgreen's or CVS (about $13.00), and I'm happy with it.

place a section of hair in between the plates as you would if you were gonna straighten your hair. then twist the straightenener round each section of hair, varying the size of each section and which way you twist your hair round i.e. clockwise or anticlockwise... hope that helps!How do you curl hair with ceramic straighteners?
its definately at an angle and dragging the striaghteners through your hair taut so you get a lovely bouncy curl.
ive seen a pro do it but at home its a different matter! tis hard!
clamp the straighteners around the hair near the top and twist them, they should slowly move down the piece of hair, but keep twisting until the very end otherwise you will get kinks, try to twist different sections clockwise and anticlockwise as it will look more natural

not sure what look u going for? my hairs quite straight and i put in a few loose ringletey curls open straighners and put on section of hair at root,using free hand wind the rest of hair down plats loosely and close straightners for couple of seconds then release hair (good tip dont touch curl until hair has cooled down) oh i forgot i usually put bit hairspray oh section i want to curl first but let it dry or youre hair will sizzle!!! it helps keep the curl set.

i think it has something to do with the angle. This way you can get a Farah Fawcet type charlies angle do. I think if you straighten then twist up it should give you that type of thing? both - chrome is less effective and worse for your hair than ceramic. Return the package and get a ceramic curler, it will be better for your hair.

The statement that hairspray will not last is not necessarily true. You just need to find the right one that will work for you. Good ol' AquaNet is the absolute best and really cheap. I have been a performer for many years and every stylist I work with has used AquaNet and it lasts hours and hours even when sweating through a 2-3 hour show. You can find it at any drugstore like CVS or Rite Aid. I want to curl my hair with a curler..but i've searched and searched either and used either the problem it was to small took 10mins to get one strand done. And i have curly hair and its puffy. Heat will damage hair regardless, however if you protect your hair when heat styling, the damage will be minimal. So, I believe what you are really asking is which will harm your hair the least.
The 24 karat barrel is better than the ceramic in the sense that it will maintain a constant temperature while curling. Gold barrel irons also do not chip or flake and hair is less likely to stick to the barrel when styling which minimizes the chances of hair being broken off. They are also easier to clean than ceramic.
In my experience, gold barrel irons also last longer than ceramic irons.
Ultimately it is up to you, but a gold iron will minimize breakage. Black women often experience hair breakage due to heat styling and hair dryness. its possible i take my portion of my hair that im going to straighten and instead of gliding it down. hold that part straight up to the ceiling and when youre going up with the iron twist it a little as if you were using a curling iron, it gives you amazing volume and great curls. hope this helps.
