For Black women, are you deemed unprofessional if you wear your hair natural?

Black men aren't really subject to this because they can wear their hair natural with no issue. But for black women, are we automatically looked at as being afrocentric, pro-black, militant etc. if we choose to wear our natural hair texture? What if it's in a white collar profession? Funny thing is that we hear people always wondering why we wear our hair this way or that way, but I wonder how I would be received if I walked into work tomorrow with my hair blowed out in a big fro.

Your thoughts?For Black women, are you deemed unprofessional if you wear your hair natural?
There are a variety of professional atmospheres that define the ';standard look'; for the feminine sex which are too politically correct to dictate to a black woman in what way her hair should be presented, yet those same hiring firms, corporations, companies, and institutes are less likely to hire African Americans to begin with. Translated: The hiring practices of many employers are meant to filter out black women who might feel empowered enough to shock their colleagues with ';a big fro.';

The back end of the process would be for an African American woman to first secure employment with a traditional European American/Caucasian hairstyle during her evaluation and interview then to revert to being natural once her tenure was determined.For Black women, are you deemed unprofessional if you wear your hair natural?
How about a fat black retarted midget with a bucket of fried chicken in one hand and a seeded watermelon in the other. Getting shot by another black person then falling down the stairs of her

I think it depends on where you live, what type of company you work for, and what style you wear. I think in diverse cities like New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, etc, you could get away with it. Also, if you work for governmental agencies, they usually will have a more open policy as far as hair.

I used to work for the Health Dept in a city, and wore braids when my hair was natural, but there was a majority of black women, and some of them were natural as well.

So you would have to get a feel for the city you live in, and how diverse your workplace is.
I guess it's possible for a Black woman to still look professional while wearing her hair natural. Here is some examples;

That's what you get for working for the man.

That's your biggest mistake, specially if you're working for white people.

I'd never do that.
I'm a white man, but I have known quite a few black women my age and I absolutely love natural hair on them. I have no problems at work with this.
nope. my hair is 100% natural. Why isn't yours?
No, only because my hair is more on the curly/wavy side so luckily I do have the freedom to wear it however I like without judgment, but I still can relate to this particular struggle (not in terms of hair texture).

I enjoy wearing head scarves from time to time for fashion and partly due to my religion but it鈥檚 not lost on me that I can鈥檛 wear it for interviews, everyday work or even at certain social gatherings in fear of people labeling something I鈥檓 not- terrorist/Muslim extremist, mainly. I know for a fact people treat me differently whenever I do wear it and as a result I feel I have to hide who I am. So I have experienced the struggle to conform to society's ';norms'; in that regard.
I wear my hair in afros, two strands; pretty much braided the majority of the year.

It's actually mainly Blacks who say things like ';Why are you trying to be so afrocentric?'; I find this to be ignorant. Not ignorant in a demeaning way, but rather, they are unaware of the (to me, obvious) fact that some Black women go natural because it's simply healthier for the hair or they just like the way it looks. Everyone doesn't HAVE to like only straight hair.

I work in a professional setting and always will since I'm in the IT field. I've given up bothering with flat ironing my hair because the texture of my hair changes when I apply heat.

I do, however, get a BUNCH of questions from my coworkers about my hair. It gets old but I don't mind really.

Ex: Coworker: ';Wow, you cut your hair!';

Me: ';No, I just wet it and it draws up.';

Coworker: ';What does that mean?';

Me: ';Don't worry about it.';

Edit: Gig, I get the same thing. I braid my own hair but I move slowly because I can. When I'm not completely done with my braids, I wear a scarf and the way I wrap it resembles a Muslim head wrap. I couldn't believe how discriminative people were to me! Silly Americans.
