I am trying to stop my hair from breaking off from being so dry and make it grow longer and healthier. Will greasing my scalp do the trick? If so how often should I and what product would be the best for highlighted fine thin hair?Hair care for black women???
greasing your scalp is never the trick, you should never use grease on your hair or scalp. it clogs the hair follicles and actually stunts hair growth.
i answered a question similar to this a few days ago so im going to copy my answer here:
assuming that you have relaxed hair, shampoo and deep condition with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Air dry, to lock in moisture and prevent breakage, then apply a light scalp oil to your scalp and a moisturizer to your strands. On the days your not washing either spray with a light leave in conditioner every other day or apply a light moisturizer every day. Try not to comb so often also, that aids in the snapping of hair.
you should also wear your hair in protective styles, any style that needs little to no combing or brushing and keeps the ends of your hair off of your clothes.
You don't have to clip your ends every month if its healthy, that will just make your shorter, hair only grows about 1/2 an inch per month, and if you cut it every month then it results in negative hair growth. Your hair will be shoulder length forever. If you keep up with your hair and get it healthy you only have to cut it once every 3 months, sometimes i only cut twice a year, and my hair is just fine.
shampoos:
creme of nature ultra moisturizing
neutrogena triple moisture shampoo(this is supposedly the better of the two)
conditioner
aubrey organics (by far the best!)
olive replenishing pak (mixed with olive oil, sweet almond oil, and tea tree oil)
creme of nature
neutrogena triple moisture
scalp oil:
ginseng wonder 8 oil (this works well for my hair, i don't know about everyone elses though.)
you should also get a fotki.com account, they're free and they have a lot women who are growing their relaxed and natural hair out.
good luck.Hair care for black women???
I also have thin hair and had the same problem you have, and my problem was putting the chemicals from the dye. If you can stop highlighting your hair b/c those chemicals will damage your hair. I know it is cute to highlights but they can also cause you to become bald. Now I did learn that before you put any chemical on your hair even a perm put some conditioner on first, and I do that before I do my perm (Olive Oil Perm) and my hair is beautiful, very soft. I use that with Biosilk which is great because you can use a little bit ON THE HAIR and not the scalp and it will moisturize your hair. You can use it everyday and it will not make your hair greasy. Our scalp produces it own oils so we just have to help mosturize the hair a Iittle to go along with the oils our own scalp naturally produces. I have my hair down past my shoulders now. I also alternate using Biosilk products with Aveda Brilliant shampoo and conditioner. Oh yea when you wash and condition your hair never use a big glob of it you only need about a quarter size drop to wash your hair, and about 2 quarter size for conditioner. People don't realize that they use too much of a product and it takes the volume and shine out of their hair by not washing all the products out properly or they use to much product and strip the natural oils from their hair. Stay away from drying your hair wrap it wet or minimize your drying time. It doesn't take much to have healthy beautiful hair.
Start by messaging your scalp with a hair dressing that contains natural herbs, vitamins, and minerals. I usually use Doo Gro Growth Lotion. I do this at least two to three times a week. www.doogro.com
By messaging your scalp will help promote hair growth.
Also limit your use of heated hair appliances. they cause the hair to become dry, brittle, and eventually break off. Start wrapping up your hair at night. Wear a silk or satin scarf. Those materials does not absorb the natural oils from our hair.
i chopped of my hair two years ago and i live by leave in conditioner a rich thick one that does not leave residue!!!! crazy moisture without clogging my pores, or weighting down your hair!!!! i love kms for curls, great even if you relax your hair and they have formulas for thick course hair, and fine hair!!! it even moisturized my cuticles and strenghtened my nails just from when i wash my hair, so now that is how i judge my conditioners, if it helps with my nails and cuticles, it with work on my hair, since your nails and hair are made after the same material!!! i also use garnier either for curls or the sleek and shine leave in conditioner!!!! also lay off the heat!!! had to learn that the hard way!!! by the way i wear my hair natural!!! its curly!!i ';wash'; my hair twice a week, but i dont shampoo it is horrible for black hair i strips out the moisture and it takes days to replace, so i rinse my hair and massage my scalp with my finger tips to loosen product residue and dirt, and then condition it!!!! but if i want a straight look i use setting lotion and do a wrap, tie it up over night and gently comb it out in the morning!! this is how i care for my hair and it is now shoulder length after two years and grows about an inch every two months!!! also take a multi-vitamin and or biotin it is a type of vitamin b and is great for hair strength and growth!!! and finally for a nice shine you can mix a shine serum in with the leave in conditioner when you apply it to your hair!!!! i know this will help
11 i have nearly no breakage, and my hair is long and healthy and moves, ALOT!!!
